Augustus W. Sexton Jr.
Written as “Augustus W. Secton, Jr.”Probably
Special Orders No. 273, issued at the headquarters of the Department of the Gulf at Brownsville, Texas, on November 13, 1863, honorably discharged “Private James D. Wade. Company ‘B’ 176th New York Vols.” to accept promotion. It was signed “By Command of Major General Banks” by “Augustus W. Secton, Jr., Lt. & A.A.A. General” (Special Orders No. 273, November 13, 1863).
The National Park Service’s Soldiers and Sailors database lists an Augustus W. Sexton, Jr., first lieutenant in the Headquarters Troops of the Department of the Gulf (NPS Soldiers and Sailors). The rank, the “Jr.” and the headquarters all match, so the transcription’s “Secton” is probably Sexton.
