Charles C. Nott

Lives Behind the Letters 176th New York, 1862–63

Written as “Col. Watt”Probably

Charles C. Nott, 34, was enrolled at Albany on December 31, 1862, and mustered in as colonel of the 176th New York on January 10, 1863. He was captured at Brashear City, Louisiana, on June 23, 1863, paroled on June 22, 1864, and mustered out on August 8, 1864 (176th roster, p. 1000). The regiment left New York for Louisiana under his command on January 11, 1863 (New York State Military Museum).

Willie wrote that Mark Hoyt “was formerly our Colonel but sold out to Col. Watt, who was taken prisoner” (Willie, September 4, 1863). The regiment’s colonels were Charles Gould, Mark Hoyt, Charles C. Nott, Ambrose Stevens and Charles Lewis (New York State Military Museum), and none was named Watt. Nott followed Hoyt and was taken prisoner, so “Col. Watt” is probably Nott.
