Durlyn Wade
Durlyn Wade, born on January 4, 1853 (FamilySearch; Brooklyn Daily Eagle, February 26, 1907, p. 10), was the youngest of the brothers named in the letters. The New York State census of 1865 lists him in the family’s household in Ward 13 of Brooklyn: Durlyn Wade, 13, born in Kings County (1865 New York State census, on FamilySearch).
“Durlyn is a Bully writer,” Willie added at the end of a letter from Fort McHenry (Willie, July 27, 1862). In June 1863 Willie was “very glad to hear… that Durlyn is promoted” (Willie, June 4, 1863), and that fall he was “pleased that he is getting along with his studies” (Willie, October 22, 1863). On guard one night, picturing the family at home, Willie wrote: “Then Durlyn I don’t know where to place. Perhaps he was wrapped in peaceful slumber. You must tell him not to forget to write” (Willie, June 12, 1863).
James asked after him too: “I have not heard from Durlyn for sometime, let him write” (James, October 19, 1863), and “Tell John and Durlyn to write to me” (James, November 20, 1863). He was “much pleased with John and Durlyn’s letters” (James, January 18, 1864), “glad to hear from Durlyn of his visit to Barnum’s” (James, February 21, 1864), and found that Durlyn “is rather improving in his writing” (James, April 13, 1864).
With his parents and his brother John, he attended the first conference on organizing Trinity Baptist Church on October 31, 1874 (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, October 10, 1912, p. 7).
Durlyn married Catherine (Guillan) Wade. By 1900 they had had four children, three of them then living: Edna, Durlyn Jr. and Wilbur; Edna May died in 1901 (Find a Grave, summarizing the 1900 census). He lived for twenty-five years in the Nineteenth Ward and was once a member of the old Lee Avenue Baptist Church. He died on Sunday, February 24, 1907, at his home, 24 Schenck Avenue, East New York, “of an affection of the hip joint after an illness of two years”, survived by his widow, two sons, two brothers and his mother (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, February 26, 1907, p. 10). He was 54, and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens, Queens, in the same lot as his brother John (Find a Grave).
