Edward R. S. Canby

Lives Behind the Letters Generals, officials and public figures

Written as “General Conby”Probably

Edward Richard Sprigg Canby was a career army officer and a Union general in the Civil War (Wikipedia).

James wrote in September 1864 that the consolidation ordered by General Herron had stalled: “before it was completed, then came an order from General Conby suspending it and making some alterations” (James, September 3, 1864). An order overruling Herron came from higher command, and Canby is the general whose name is closest, so “General Conby” is probably Canby.
