Elbert S. Porter

Lives Behind the Letters 47th New York State Militia, 1862

Written as “Dr Porter”Probably

Elbert S. Porter, 40, was mustered in at Brooklyn on May 27, 1862, as chaplain of the 47th Regiment, New York State Militia, for three months’ service (47th muster-in roll, PDF p. 1). The regiment served that summer at Fort McHenry, Baltimore (New York State Military Museum).

Willie wrote from Fort McHenry in July 1862: “We had a very nice time last week when Dr Porter was up here. I expect you read his letter in the paper” (Willie, July 27, 1862). The regiment’s chaplain was named Porter, so Willie’s Dr Porter is probably him.
