Frederic De Graw

Lives Behind the Letters 176th New York, 1862–63

Written as “DeGraw”Probably

Frederic De Graw, 18, enlisted at Brooklyn on September 9, 1862, for three years, and was mustered in as a private in Company G of the 176th New York. He was promoted corporal, captured at Brashear City on June 23, 1863, paroled on August 17, and mustered out with his company in New York City on November 16, 1863 (176th roster, p. 900).

Willie reported in October 1863 that “George Fanjoy, DeGraw, and Vale are well” (Willie, October 22, 1863). Mother wrote that “Lieut. Stevenson made out DeGraw’s papers. DeGraw left for the west a day or two after he got home” (Mother to James, December 27, 1863). Frederic was the only De Graw in the regiment who served, and he went home with the company in November 1863, so DeGraw is probably him.
