Frederick Scholes

Lives Behind the Letters 47th New York State Militia, 1862

Written as “Quartermaster Scholes”, “The Quartermaster”

Frederick Scholes, 38, was mustered in at Brooklyn on May 27, 1862, as quartermaster of the 47th Regiment, New York State Militia, for three months’ service at Fort McHenry (47th muster-in roll, PDF p. 1). He was probably the Frederick Scholes, brimstone manufacturer, whom the city directory lists in the Eastern District, the regiment’s home (1862 Brooklyn City Directory).

After the first payday in August 1862 James wrote that “the Quartermaster has kindly offered to send our money home for us”, and enclosed $25 from Willie and himself (James, August 8, 1862). Two days later he explained: “Willie and I sent home $25.00 by Quartermaster Scholes… The Quartermaster is responsible for the money so I think there will be no difficulty about it” (James, August 10, 1862).
