George Bale
Written as “Bucky Bale”Probably
George Bale, 18, was mustered in at Brooklyn on May 27, 1862, as a drummer in Company H, 47th Regiment, New York State Militia (47th muster-in roll, PDF p. 16).
Willie wrote from Fort McHenry: “Johny Kelly is getting to be the laziest boy in the Reg’t., can’t drum a bit. Bucky Bale is one of the best drummers here” (Willie, July 27, 1862). George Bale was the only drummer of that name in the regiment, so “Bucky” is probably his nickname.
