George W. Totten

Lives Behind the Letters 176th New York, 1862–63

Probably

George W. Totten, 25, enlisted at Brooklyn on September 22, 1862, for three years, and was mustered in as a private in Company B of the 176th New York. He was promoted sergeant, captured at Brashear City on June 23, 1863, and paroled on August 17. On August 25, 1863, he was detached on recruiting service for the “Sixteenth U. S. Colored Infantry”, and the roster has no further record of him (176th roster, p. 1052).

Home in Williamsburgh in December 1863, Willie wrote: “Totten and Armstrong I believe are home” (Willie to James, December 27, 1863). George Totten was the only Totten in the regiment, and in Willie’s company, so this is probably him.
