Ira A. Whitman

Lives Behind the Letters 176th New York, 1862–63

Ira A. Whitman, 19, enlisted in New York City on September 30, 1862, for nine months, and was mustered in as a private in Company B of the 176th New York. He was mustered out on February 15, 1864 (176th roster, p. 1068).

James wrote that “Ira Whitman, Ike Luce, and Gretna’s Drum Major have gone to New Orleans to get their discharge, they having never mustered into our Regiment” (James, April 13, 1864). By June he supposed “Ira Whitman has posted you up” on how things were done in Texas, and had written to him (James, June 26, 1864).
