John E. Wool

Lives Behind the Letters Generals, officials and public figures

Written as “Gen. Wool”, “General Wool”

John Ellis Wool was a career army officer who had served in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, and was a Union general in the Civil War (Wikipedia).

At Fort McHenry in July 1862, with the sick and wounded lying “around under the guns”, Willie wrote that “one night Gen. Wool came in here and gave Morris such a jawing. I was about two yards off to see the fun”; the next day the road was “blocked with wagons bringing in tents, beds, bed sheets” (Willie, July 27, 1862). James added that “General Wool is showing great energy in the Department. Every vessel is stopped and every body must give an account of himself” (James, August 10, 1862).
