John Pope

Lives Behind the Letters Generals, officials and public figures

Written as “Gens. Pope and Halleck”

John Pope was a Union general who, after early success in the West, was brought east in 1862 to lead the newly formed Army of Virginia; he is best known for his defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run (Wikipedia).

In July 1862, a month before that battle, Willie wrote: “I think as soon as Gens. Pope and Halleck have a say on the fight, it will be all over” (Willie, July 27, 1862).
