John S. Ford
Written as “Lord”Probably
John Salmon “Rip” Ford was a Texas Ranger and Confederate colonel. He raised 1,300 men, “The Cavalry of the West”, and recaptured Fort Brown at Brownsville on July 30, 1864 (Wikipedia).
A month earlier James wrote of Benavides “and Lord together” with “a force up the River about Padras Negras… about 1200 men with him, old Rangers, and Indian fighters”, and thought “there are troops enough at Brownsville to take care of him” (James, June 26, 1864). Ford was the Confederate commander gathering such a force on the river that summer, so “Lord” is probably Ford.
