Joseph Wade

Lives Behind the Letters Relatives

Written as “Uncle Joe”Probably

Willie wrote in December 1863: “I made 12 shillings Christmas Eve helping Uncle Joe in his store” (Willie to James, December 27, 1863).

The Brooklyn city directories list a Joseph Wade in the Eastern District, Williamsburgh, at 121½ Grand Street: “fancygoods” in 1862 (1862 Brooklyn City Directory) and “varieties” in 1863 (1863 Brooklyn City Directory). A Joseph Wade keeping a store in Williamsburgh fits “Uncle Joe in his store”, so this is probably him. How he was related to the family is not yet known.
