Miss Vale

Lives Behind the Letters Williamsburgh: friends, church and neighbors

Not identified

James added to a letter from New Orleans: “If you should come across a Miss Vale of No.10 South 6th Street, tell her that her son is robust and healthy and that I will comply with her request and write him” (James, October 15, 1863). The Wades lived at 183 South 6th Street (James, January 17, 1864).

Her son was probably William Vale, a Brooklyn man in the 176th New York whom Willie named the next week. Her own name is not known.
