P. T. Barnum

Lives Behind the Letters Generals, officials and public figures

Written as “Barnum's”

Phineas Taylor Barnum was a showman and businessman (Wikipedia). From 1841 to 1865 he owned Barnum’s American Museum, a dime museum of strange and educational attractions on Broadway in lower Manhattan (Wikipedia: Barnum’s American Museum).

Home at Christmas 1863, Willie wrote: “I went over to New York to Barnum’s with John” (Willie to James, December 27, 1863). James was “glad to hear from Durlyn of his visit to Barnum’s. He seemed to enjoy his visit very much” (James, February 21, 1864).
