Santos Benavides

Lives Behind the Letters Generals, officials and public figures

Written as “Bennevetus”Probably

Santos Benavides of Laredo was a Confederate colonel, the highest-ranking Tejano in the Confederate army; he lived until 1891 (Wikipedia).

In June 1864, after Confederates surprised two companies of Union Texas cavalry above Brownsville, James wrote: “it is said we killed Bennevetus in the fight and he and Lord together have a force up the River about Padras Negras… but there are troops enough at Brownsville to take care of him” (James, June 26, 1864). Benavides was a Confederate colonel from Laredo, up the Rio Grande, so “Bennevetus” is probably him; the rumor of his death was wrong.
