William Barry

Lives Behind the Letters 176th New York, 1862–63

Probably

William Barry, 18, enlisted in New York City on October 22, 1862, for nine months, and was mustered in as a private in Company B of the 176th New York. He was captured at Brashear City on June 23, 1863, paroled on August 17, and mustered out with his company in New York City on November 16, 1863 (176th roster, p. 857).

On the voyage home, Willie wrote, “I did not know Fanjoy was aboard till the second day when Barry let me know where he was” (Willie to James, December 27, 1863). William Barry was the only Barry in the regiment, and a nine-months man in Willie’s own company who went home with it, so this is probably him.
