William H. Coxsen
Written as “Coxson”Probably
William H. Coxsen, 22, enrolled in New York City on September 23, 1862, for three years, and was mustered in as a private in Company G of the 176th New York. He was promoted sergeant in Company I and mustered in as captain on January 1, 1864. He was wounded at Winchester, Virginia, on September 19, 1864, and discharged for disability on January 23, 1865. The roster also gives his name as Carson and Boxson (176th roster, p. 892).
When the conscripts reached camp in October 1863, Willie wrote: “I saw Curner & Coxson and got those handkerchiefs” (Willie, October 22, 1863). Coxsen is the only man of that name on the regiment’s roster, so Willie’s Coxson is probably him.
