William H. Mott

Lives Behind the Letters 47th New York State Militia, 1862

Written as “Orderly Sam Mott”Probably

William H. Mott, 33, was mustered in at Brooklyn on May 27, 1862, as first sergeant of Company H, 47th Regiment, New York State Militia (47th muster-in roll, PDF p. 16). The first sergeant was the company’s orderly sergeant.

Willie described a ball match at Fort McHenry “between our Co. and Co.H”: “Our Lieutenant played and the Lieutenant and Orderly Sam Mott played on the other side” (Willie, July 27, 1862). Company H’s first sergeant was a Mott, so Willie’s Orderly Sam Mott is probably him, although the roll gives his first name as William.
