Born c.1841 (the 1850 and 1880 U.S. censuses and the 1855 New York State census, on FamilySearch, and his age of 21 on the 176th roster), William (“Willie”) served beside James in both of his first regiments: in Company F of the 47th New York State Militia at Fort McHenry in the summer of 1862 (muster roll), and in Company B of the 176th New York Infantry, which he joined at Brooklyn on September 26, 1862. He was mustered out with his company in New York City on November 16, 1863 (176th roster). Home in Williamsburgh, he went into business: in June 1864 James was “glad that Will is succeeding so well in business”, and wrote that his store “had been open about one week” (James, June 26, 1864). That autumn James saw “Will belongs to the Eckfords”, the Brooklyn baseball club; “he always was a heavy batter” (James, September 3, 1864). The 1865 state census lists him as a carpenter (1865 New York State census). He became a builder: when his brother John moved into a new house on Kossuth Place in 1876, “Mr. William H. Wade was the architect and builder” (Brooklyn Times Union, July 10, 1876, p. 2). On August 10, 1868, in Brooklyn, he married Emma May Goodrich (New York City marriage records, on FamilySearch), and they had a son, William Jr. He was living at 415 Grant Avenue, Richmond Hill, Queens, when he died suddenly on July 28, 1908, at Ocean Grove, on the beach at the Ross bathing grounds in New Jersey (Brooklyn Daily Eagle, July 30, 1908, p. 14), and is buried in a family plot in Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens, Queens (Find a Grave, quoting the Asbury Park Evening Press, July 29, 1908).
