William T. Sherman

Lives Behind the Letters Generals, officials and public figures

William Tecumseh Sherman was a Union general known for his command of military strategy and for the scorched-earth campaign he waged against the Confederacy (Wikipedia).

In September 1864 James hoped the rumored surrender of Mobile was true — “it will be such a splendid base I suppose for Sherman” — and was “expecting to hear of the fall of Atlanta by the next mail” (James, September 3, 1864).
