William Vale

Lives Behind the Letters 176th New York, 1862–63

Probably

William Vale, 18, enlisted at Brooklyn on September 13, 1862, for three years, and was mustered in as a private in Company G of the 176th New York. He was captured at Brashear City on June 23, 1863, paroled on August 17, promoted sergeant before the end of 1863, and discharged at Madisonville, Louisiana, on February 15, 1864. The roster also gives his name as Vail (176th roster, p. 1055).

Willie wrote in October 1863 that “George Fanjoy, DeGraw, and Vale are well” (Willie, October 22, 1863). A week earlier James asked the family to tell Miss Vale of 10 South 6th Street “that her son is robust and healthy” (James, October 15, 1863). William was the only Vale in the regiment in 1863, so this is probably him.
