Letter from James to parents, August 8, 1862#
Baltimore, Ft. McHenry
Aug 8th 1862
Dear Parents,
The long expected but ever welcome Paymaster made his appearance this morning with his money bags. You may be sure that the boys were very prompt in falling into line for pay. Each private received $15.16. The Sergeants each received $19.80, with the exception of the 1st Sergeant who got $14.00 more. Willie has not received his extra pay yet but expects to soon. This is one month’s pay but no one can say how much we will receive for the next two months’ pay now nearly due. The Quartermaster has kindly offered to send our money home for us.
Enclosed you will find $25.00 from Willie and me. We have about $2.00 left between us, as we both owed the sutler the rest for necessary articles we had to purchase.
No more for the present from your affectionate son,
Jas D Wade
