Partial letter from Willie to Parents, October 26, 1862#

Sunday, Oct 26, 1862

Dear Father, Mother

It is Sunday. I have just eaten my rations. It is a very dismal day. I have been down to church this morning and had a first-rate sing and a good sermon. There were about 100 of us who went down to church in charge of one of the sergeants. We were divided among the different churches. There is no Baptist Church here; most of us go to the Methodist Church. There are also Dutch Reformed, Presbyterian, Episcopal, and Catholic churches. We got pretty wet going to church but I felt gay after leaving such a good sing. A few of us shone in the choir. A young man and myself went down to class meeting last Tuesday and had a very good meeting; most every one spoke. We are to have a prayer meeting in camp this week. It was given out in church in Jamaica this morning. The Regiment is filling up slowly. Our Co. is very nearly full. They talk of consolidating the other Companies.

The Colonel and the Lieutenant-Colonel and most of the officers have had very little experience in Military duties. Our Major talks of resigning.

We are all well. The Regt. is enjoying good health and drill pretty well in marching. They have a very strict guard on.

George Fanjoy went down on a pass yesterday. That was a bully pie you sent up last Sunday. We divided it around
