Letter from Capt. W.W. Bliss to James, October 4, 1864#
Brazos Santiago Tex.
Oct 4th 1864
Lieut.
On examination, I find that the five sergeants of your old Company have no waist belts except the non-commissioned. – They say that they turned in their private belts – at the same time with their swords & sword belts. This will leave a deficiency of five waist belts & plates, two sword belts & plates, and seven gun slings, which the men evidently did not have at the time I took command of the company. As I shall probably have to turn over my Company property very soon, I shall have no opportunity of making good the discrepancy – and I cannot reasonably ask any man to receipt for stores that I can give no account of. I am perfectly willing to receipt for all the property which appears to have been in the hands of the men at the time I took command of them, or for all the articles on your invoice except the above named.
Yours very respectfully,
Capt. Wm W. Bliss
